ABOUT THE RENSSELAER COUNTY LEGISLATURE

Rensselaer County is governed by a County Executive and the County Legislature .

The County Executive is the Chief Executive Officer of the County and manages the daily operations of all County departments. The County Executive is responsible for final approval of legislative action by approval or veto of all legislation pertaining to the operation of the County.

The County Legislature is the policy making body of Rensselaer County and its powers include adopting the annual County budget, levying taxes and appropriations. The Legislature also oversees county services and programs through the enactment of local laws, resolutions and the appointment of county officials.

The County Legislature consists of 19 members that are elected to four-year terms. All legislators are elected in the same year, the most recent year being 2005. The members of the Legislature are chosen to represent six legislative districts, as follows:

District 1 (City of Troy ): 6 Legislators
District 2 (Towns of East Greenbush, North Greenbush , Poestenkill): 4 Legislators
District 3 (Towns of Brunswick , Pittstown, Schaghticoke): 3 Legislators
District 4 (Towns of Nassau , Sand Lake , Schodack): 3 Legislators
District 5 (Towns of Berlin , Grafton, Hoosick, Hoosick Falls , Petersburgh, Stephentown): 2 Legislators
District 6 (City of Rensselaer ): 1 Legislator

ABOUT THE DEMOCRATIC MINORITY


Currently, Democrats occupy 6 seats and are in the minority on the 19 member County Legislature. As a result, Democrats are in the minority on all legislative committees and cannot, on their own, introduce legislation for consideration by the Legislature without approval by the Republican Majority.

The Democratic members of the legislature are dedicated to the following:

  1. Making government more open and accountable
  2. Reducing taxes by making government more efficient
  3. Planning for the future and improving our quality of life
